🔥AFP’s MH17 mission revealed in new in-depth podcast series

A new podcast led by the AFP, launched today, reveals remarkable firsthand accounts of a tragedy that became one of the world's most complex policing missions: Malaysia Airlines flight MH17.

Revelations:

The AFP podcast 'Search Among the Sunflowers: Looking for Truth in the World's Biggest Crime Scene' details the story of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, shot down over eastern Ukraine back in 2014.

It focuses on the impacts of the tragedy on Australian families and the Australian response to the emergency, including that of the AFP's mission to repatriate the victims. The five-part series investigates the stories of family members, investigators, and specialist police that worked in conjunction with the loved ones of the victims in their fight for answers.

The podcast includes 18 new interviews, culled from over 21 hours of audio tapes, detailing intimate stories associated with the tragedy and how it has emotionally scarred its victims. Just ahead of the tenth anniversary of the tragedy, the podcast was released on July 17.

Why does this matter to you?

It personalizes the experiences and emotional damage of those affected by tragedy, giving meaning to the human cost behind the headlines. The podcast serves as a reminder of the need to keep supporting the families and communities affected by disaster, and the great acts of resilience and REAL strength shown in times of crisis by individuals.

Our View

We, as podcasters, firmly believe that through listening to these stories, it can increase one's empathy. Just like a recent study we went through pointed out, personal storytelling can help increase empathy by about 30%. We would thus like to show respect to the memories of the deceased which we will be sharing and also contribute towards inspiring other people to help those in need through our stories.

🚨Leveraging YouTube for Podcast Growth: Best Practices and Strategies

How does one find out about podcasts? How are people consuming podcasts? These two questions can help guide your podcast marketing.

The Disclosures:

99% of people surveyed in a recent study from Headliner’s listen to podcasts. Most of them were learners who held at least a bachelor's degree and were between the ages of 25 through 34. Of those asked, 68% were men. The majority, 95%, were Americans.

We also looked at trends in podcast discovery and consumption. While 60% of the respondents used only podcast players, the remaining 75% listened to podcasts on YouTube. Social media, at 71%, became the most popular discovery method, surpassing the podcast players with 70%, YouTube with 59%, WOM, and personal recommendations with 33%.

By applying a multi-channel approach, one can bridge traditional channels, like podcast players, with new age marketing platforms like social media and YouTube to gain maximum podcast discoverability and size of the targeted audience. Preferences to podcasts vary between men and women. As reported, women use both YouTube and podcast players equally to listen to podcasts, 60%, while men lean towards podcast players more than women.

Also, correlations between podcast discovery and consumption could be retrieved. The footprint of the number of people discovering shows through YouTube is positively correlated with the footprint of the people listening to podcasts. The fans of podcasts can thus discover podcasts on YouTube. That basically means there's a real chance that more podcast listeners are made aware of new series to be launched on YouTube.

The study suggests that increasing the number of people who are discovering your show through podcasting requires a multichannel approach. While promoting your show across traditional podcast platforms, on YouTube, and across social media puts maximum reach in your arsenal, tailoring your show to one platform may be the best option in instances where resources are limited or modeling a specific audience. Having a show on as many mediums as possible increases its discoverability the most, assuming you have the bandwidth for it.

Several strategies are involved in optimising podcasts, such as using YouTube to its best, engaging in social media, and enhancing search engine status. That includes tags, transcriptions, descriptions, and/or keywords relevant to the podcast. Use those items to help your podcast be more discoverable. Effective podcast optimization will flip this question around to instead make you think through audience behavior and how podcasts are actually found in the first place.

It is important to deliberately invest in podcast optimization, but do not fall for simply fulfilling the checklist requirements your host may have. Ensure that value comes to the titles, descriptions, and tags in your show by paying due attention to metadata and ticking off all the boxes your host asks you to. Keywords research helps you match the search intent effectively for your podcast. Probably the easiest way to do this is to find pertinent, broad topics, then narrow them down to most suitably fit the content of your podcast and the interest of your listeners.

Follow the people who are watching you.

It also means you're existing where your current and ideal listeners hang out. If you're looking to tap more into a younger generation with your podcast, consider taking your podcast to social media and putting a stake in the ground on YouTube. It really boils down to being in places it makes sense for you, your show, and your bandwidth to be where your audience already is hanging out. You don't have to be everywhere.

Scaling a podcast involves using effective social media to drive engagement with the listeners, as well as to drive further protocols of interaction. Share your show content on social media and engage with your audience by responding, liking, commenting, and following back—all for stronger relationships.

Social media:

Social media set up manifold paths through which podcasts have been garnering leverage to reach out to mainstream success and visibility. Podcasters can help themselves out in using social media, YouTube, and purposeful SEO to navigate the digital age effectively and increase a show's chances at success. You can set up or optimize a podcast for social media by using hashtags in your content since most of the algorithms across social media treat them as search terms. Rename your files with the name of your podcast or add one or three relevant keywords to give your content an extra boost.

Keep your content consistent. Posting consistently gives the signal to social media platforms that, yes, your account is live and current; after all, social media values being timely and relevant. But consistency in look and feel is also crucial for branding and recognisability purposes. Replay similar design choices, colours, and fonts.

Another significant part of podcast marketing involves growing your podcast with the power of YouTube. Fifty-nine percent of surveyed podcast listeners said that YouTube—with its billions of active users—is an excellent weapon to increase your podcast. Uploading your show to YouTube is one of the best and easiest ways to maximize your podcast and speed up its growth. Here are some tips on how to optimize your podcast on YouTube:

Information and Sources:

The surveying took place via Amazon Mechanical Turk with a total of 315 unique respondents worldwide.

Why is this relevant?

In order for podcasters to gain more followers, develop authority, and really flex their credibility, they need to ensure their shows are optimized for social media, YouTube, and other platforms. Social media, YouTube, and purposeful SEO set the activities through which podcasters can get traction in the digital landscape and achieve maximal success with their show.

Our View

Knowing what's actually going on and the sources that support that work from the podcaster is going to help one form an episode that will resonate with listeners and definitely raise interaction.
