🔥Podcasting Resilience: Analyzing August's Listener Trends and Growth

This is in line with data from Podtrac, which show podcasting does not face the same summertime decline in listenership that some other forms of media face.

Highlights: US downloads were up month-over-month in August for eleven of the top twenty-one publishers; thirteen US ranking participants saw an increase in US Unique Monthly Audience. Eleven publishers had a higher monthly download volume in the US, with seven of the top global networks showing increases in global downloads, views, and downloads.

iHeartMedia still took the top spot for the month of August, with its titles continuing to take the biggest reach in the US, recording 31.2 million listeners and 171 million downloads. Disney placed second biggest publisher, after NPR formerly measured as a publisher, transitioned in Podtrac's network list. It recorded 8.1 million unique listeners and 26.9 million downloads. Among sales networks, iHeart Audience Network led in the U.S. with more than 380 million downloads; Libsyn was in second place with 21.9 million unique listeners. NPR ranked high. So did Wondery and Acast. ESPN and ABC News are behind some of Disney's shows.

Why it matters: The rise of iHeartPodcasts and Disney, for instance, testifies to the boom in this industry and proves the dynamics in podcasting, with how publishers in general are putting up a fight to outcompete the sales networks. The underlying factor in their success pertains to how imperative it has become to create strategic partnerships and quality content in order to reach a mass audience.

Takeaway as a podcast producer: This epitomizes the importance of building strong partnerships and continually producing quality content in a highly competitive environment in podcasting. For us producers, innovation and collaboration are keys toward relevance and growing listenership.

🚨 Embracing Video in Podcasting: A New Era for Legacy Creators

It's time to insert video into podcasting. Serious podcasters need to get serious about evolving content strategies to suit the younger, more visually-oriented audiences already listening on YouTube, TikTok, et al. That is what Steve Goldstein, Amplifi Media Founder, took away from the "A View from the Top" session at the Podcast Movement conference last week.

In the latest blog post, Goldstein put a big importance on how podcasters should understand various audiences when it comes to consuming podcasts in order to create successful content.

Highlights:

  • Video is becoming integral to podcasting: This means it's true that legacy podcasters are increasingly being asked to consider adding video, as newer creators lead the charge, while platforms such as YouTube and TikTok will drive considerable engagement for younger audiences.

  • On the flip side, video isn't right for every podcaster, but it does need to be on the table.

  • It's essential to be multi-platform, as podcasting has grown far beyond RSS feeds alone.

  • AI is going to be a huge production tool, but great caution is called for in its application to keep it authentic and centered on the human element.

  • The future is uncertain but full of possibility. Those who will most successfully navigate the suddenly shifting technological innovations and evolving habits of consumption that are changing the game will be those podcasters who continue to be fluid and change-ready.

Why it matters: The audience in podcasting is an ever-changing landscape of video uprisings, changed technology, and fluctuating dynamics among podcast listeners. In order to be relevant and engaging, podcasters need to adjust their strategies to retain audiences' interests. Of course, building loyal traffic is more critical than merely chasing after it, and time spent listening and return visits give a far greater view of the long-term potential for a podcast.

Our take as Podcast Manager : As podcast producers, we find it really important to interact with our listeners regularly for their feedback and to encourage interaction in order to capture their tastes and preferences for creating content suited to them. A podcaster's ability to keep up with the behaviour and interests of the audience means continued growth in loyal fans, and staying ahead in the competitive podcasting industry.
