The Podcast Show, the biggest international gathering of the podcast industry, kicked off its two-day run at The Business Design Centre in Islington today. With attendees from over 40 countries, industry professionals, independent podcast creators, business leaders, emerging talent and fans alike gathered to hear the likes of James Corden, Elizabeth Day, Amol Rajan and Roman and Martin Kemp take to the stage.

During an ‘In Conversation’ with SiriusXM’s president Scott Greenstein, James Corden spoke about the launch of his new podcast This Life Of Mine...with James Corden saying that his dream guest would be King Charles. Corden said:

“I'd love to do King Charles. I'd be so interested to know what his favorite song is."

Having commented on his frustrations with ad breaks whilst hosting The Late Late Show, he spoke about what he most enjoyed about doing the new podcast. He said:

“It's the element of freedom that you've got in a free-form flowing hour-long conversation, and giving that an edit to try and make that the purest version of who a guest is.”

In the Origin Theatre, Elizabeth Day spoke about diversifying the podcast industry, delving into how the space has changed since she started to become saturated by ‘white middle-aged men’. Elizabeth stressed that her new production company Daylight Productions will aim to create work that challenges this status quo. Day announced that later this summer, Daylight Productions will launch its first podcast.

Elsewhere, BBC Sounds unveiled an exciting new raft of commissions including a brand-new podcast coming this summer hosted by Clara Amfo and Jordan Stephens called, Make Me a Mixtape, where they will be on a weekly mission to build the ultimate mixtape with celebrity guests. In addition to this, Rory Stewart will present The Long History of Ignorance: From Confucius to QAnon, a new 6-part series for Radio 4 and BBC Sounds, examining the radical idea that knowing our ignorance is more important than knowing anything else. Further commission announcements from BBC Sounds included new shows with the likes of Kyle Walker, Ros Atkins and Marianna Spring

On the day that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a surprise election on the 4th of July, Lewis Goodall (Global Player’s The News Agents) reported live on stage that protestors were outside Downing Street playing the song ‘Things Can Only Get Better’ (D:Ream) ahead of the Prime Minister making his election announcement in the rain. Commenting on the importance of podcasting this election year, he said:

“2024 will be the podcast election... because there has been such a proliferation of political podcasting as that's where people tend to get their political fix”

In a talk entitled, ‘How Does the BBC Cover an Election?’, Amol Rajan announced that The Today Podcast will release an extra episode each week to cover the upcoming election.

Kirsty Young, host of Young Again, during a talk about, ‘The Art of the Interview’, revealed that Barry Manilow was a ‘difficult interviewee’ and ‘sat with sunglasses and didn’t look at her throughout his interview’. Kirsty revealed that Emma Barnett would be who she would want to interview her personally, whilst also naming the ‘insightful and smart’ Michelle Obama as her dream interviewee.

Further well-known names who attended The Podcast Show today to speak about their podcasts included the likes of Rylan, Martin and Roman Kemp, Sam Thompson, Pete Wicks and Gemma Atkinson.

The Podcast Show, the biggest international festival for the business of podcasting, is a one-of-a-kind event that celebrate podcasting, supports new creators and helps shape the future of podcasting.
