A year and a half later, Listen Notes data shows that the number of new podcast launches in May decreased even further.
The Revelation:
Listen Notes, a podcast search engine, indicates that 11,057 new shows debuted last month, which is the lowest number this year at 0.338%. Since January, there has been a monthly decrease in the number of new podcast debuts. 20,356 new podcasts were released, doubling the number from May.
In 2024 so far, Listen Notes reports that 81,192 new podcasts have launched. Although the pace is slower than in previous years, the number of launches in the first five months of 2024 exceeds the total for 2015. The peak of new show debuts was in 2020 during the pandemic, with 1,020,370 new shows launching.
To understand the scope of the podcast industry, one may ask: How many podcasts are there?
Data about the podcast industry is seen through the eyes of Listen Notes, a leading podcast database and search engine. There are 198,008,263 episodes and at least 3,360,629 podcasts in existence.
In comparison, Audible has over 470,000 audiobooks, Spotify has over 70 million songs, and IMDB has over 8.3 million titles (movies, TV shows, and TV episodes).

The Revelation
The Joe Rogan Experience, The Diary of a CEO with Steven Bartlett, and Sh**ged Married Annoyed are the three titles that will still be in the top three from Q4 2023 to Q1 2024.
The Top Five now includes Saving Grace, the podcast by GK Barry, who transitioned from TikTok to podcasting. Barry was featured in January's Cosmopolitan following a successful February tour, further boosting the recognition of Saving Grace. The UK podcast ShxtsNGigs, currently on a U.S. tour, makes its debut in the Top Ten rankings.
After debuting in the Top 25 with their podcast in October 2023, The Chunkz & Filly Show rose to #10 in the rankings. The Fellas secure the 16th position in the podcast rankings. Fellas Studios recently launched Fellas Loaded, a pioneering paid streaming service.

Edison Research interviews 8,000 15-over podcast listeners about their shows each year. In addition to podcast weekly reach, the report tracks demographics, content preferences, and listening habits.

🚨Scope3 Unveils Media Reporting for Ad Emissions Measurement
Scope3, the collaborative sustainability platform driving the decarbonization of media and advertising, today launched Media Reporting, the first always-on reporting tool in the industry for brands and media buyers to measure ad emissions and cut waste across their digital ad campaigns.
