As Ariel Shapiro of Hot Pod reported, Pineapple Street Studios received a recent enquiry about creating a new show from Mailchimp, one of the most well-known sponsors in the podcasting domain.

In order to produce narrative advertisements and branded series for Mailchimp, Pineapple and Mailchimp started collaborating in 2019.

When management at their parent company, the radio giant Audacy, informed the Pineapple Street staff in a meeting on October 3rd that the new Mailchimp contract required that all work on the series be done by non-union workers, the staff was taken aback, according to the Verge, considering their longstanding relationship.

i’ve genuinely enjoyed working with the team at Mailchimp over the last year so hearing this was disappointing but also just shocking and hurtful

The the other day, National Labour Relations Board has received a complaint from Pineapple Street Studios employees against Audacy. The Writers Guild of America East (WGAE) claims Pineapple Street's parent company Audacy is bargaining in bad faith for their first union contract. Audacy threatened layoffs if the bargaining unit didn't grant Pineapple Street client Intuit Mailchimp a side-letter agreement to work exclusively with non-union workers.

From 2018, Pineapple Street has produced Mailchimp podcasts and ads, including four seasons of Going Through It. July saw the end of season four. Intuit, Mailchimp's new owner, reportedly has a contract with Pineapple and Audacy that forbids unionisation.

Intuit Mailchimp decided to walk away from a podcast project with Pineapple Street Studios. Why? Because workers at Pineapple Street Studios are unionized.

Now, in a letter to Intuit and Mailchimp, WGAE requests that the companies remove the "anti-union" clause from their contracts, citing the National Labour Relations Act's protection of union activity as evidence that the clause is "both unethical and illegal."
