🎙️ Podcast Dominate the attention economy, 42 % aged 12 listen to Podcast

“You’re going to be terrible at a lot of things for years until you’re successful. People probably aren’t going to listen to your podcast initially. But if you like it and you keep putting it out, people will find it.”

I recall Keith Kingbay, co-host of New Player Has Joined, saying this. Being a podcaster or podcast producer like you and me requires passion and love for the work, and the community will support you in achieving your goal of reaching a global audience.

I hope you will enjoy this week's newsletter, and please support our fellow creative professionals under WGA and SAG-AFTRA on their ongoing strikes.

Happy Podcasting!

Today in History

1804 Juno, one of the largest main belt asteroids discovered by German astronomer Karl Ludwig Harding.

The argument in favour of podcast advertising has just gotten louder: Podcast ads get more attention than those in other media. Podcast advertisements seem to hold consumers' attention longer than those on other popular media platforms, like TV, according to research from the ad agency Densu. Additionally, compared to their rivals, podcast ads produce impressive ad recall.

More than 180 million Americans listen to podcasts that catch their interest, and the audience is rapidly growing. Topics range from true crime to wellness to politics. Fans are incredibly receptive to brand messages, which is a boon for brave advertisers who have embraced podcasts.

Podcast ads attract two times as much attention as social media, digital video, and TV ad formats, according to dentsu's 2023 Attention Economy Podcast Study, which was carried out in collaboration with the research firm Lumen.

With an average attention span of 14.2 seconds, host-read podcast advertisements outperformed 30-second TV spots.

The popularity of podcasts is currently at an all-time high. According to The Infinite Dial®, 42% of Americans aged 12 and over listen to the medium each month. However, podcasting continues to ignore some American generations.

Gabriel Soto, senior director of research at Edison Research, gave a presentation last week at Podcast Movement 2023 in Denver on why reaching out to each generation of Americans—from Baby Boomers to Millennials—is important for the development of podcasting. But today's youth may be the most crucial generation to appeal to.

“As you can see from the graphic below, of the five age cohorts Soto analyzed in Denver, the highest reach of weekly podcast listening occurs among U.S. Millennials (currently age 25-42). Half (50%) listen to the medium every week. Listening rates diminish as we go down (and up) in age.” Soto said

What you should do is: Create a fantastic card for Dad, tell him why he's the best, don't forget to include some wonderful interpretive drawings of him (), and then list the top five podcasts recommended by LiSTNR for Father's Day along with a promise to give him time to listen to them. Dad will love this Father's Day gift and will keep it, listen to it, and remember it.

It could just be the greatest Father’s Day gift ever, and it’s free! This year forget jocks and socks, and give Dad time; time to listen to other Dads talking about being a Dad, because being a Dad has changed!

The podcasts on LiSTNR's Father's Day Listening List feature discussions between Dr. Daniel Golshevsky (Dr. Golly) and parents who have developed into "experts" in their children's health as well as insights from a father for the first time, Raph Dixon, about what it's like to be a dad in the 21st century with contributions from Aaron Gocs and Osher Gunsberg.
