🎧 Uncovering the Influence of Co-Listening on Podcast Consumption

The latest report from Cumulus Media and Signal Hill Insights on podcast consumption in Spring 2024 reveals that co-listening leads to undercounting.

The Background :

In the twelfth Podcast Download series, Cumulus Media and Signal Hill Insights commissioned MARU/Matchbox to study 603 weekly podcast listeners from April 19-24, 2024. Cumulus Media and Signal Hill Insights conduct two studies annually. The Spring 2024 Report reviews previous studies on co-listening, platform preference, content trends, brand safety, and content appropriateness.

Liz Mayer, Insights Manager at Cumulus Media | Westwood One Audio Active Group®, and Paul Riismandel, Chief Insights Officer and Partner at Signal Hill Insights, extensively analyzed the Podcast Download consumer study.

The Revelation :

The Podcast Download series, conducted by Cumulus Media and Signal Hill Insights, has revealed that podcast consumption is undercounted due to co-listening with friends, family, and children. The study revealed that 14% of weekly podcast consumers frequently listen to podcasts with others, while 42% have listened with others at some point. The podcast genre profile of co-listeners varies, with 31% of the kids/family genre and 26% of rewatching podcasts being frequent co-listeners.Podcasts are an ideal platform for reaching entrepreneurs and individuals with multiple jobs, as half of dedicated podcast listeners have a side hustle. Younger podcast consumers are more likely to have a side hustle, with nearly two-thirds working a second gig. The majority of podcast consumption occurs within 24 hours of release, with 71% of weekly consumers tuning in within a day.Podcast Pioneers and women enjoy listening to previous episodes, with 64% of women revisiting back episodes for new podcasts and 73% for missed episodes. YouTube has been the most utilized podcast listening platform in the U.S. for the past year and a half, followed by Spotify (21%) and Apple (12%). YouTube dominates for podcast discovery, with a third of weekly podcast consumers using YouTube to discover the podcast.Younger podcast consumers are more likely to listen to new podcasts, with 68% having started to listen to a new podcast in the past three months. TikTok leads for podcast discovery among 18-34 podcast consumers across social media platforms.

Our Data and Sources :

The Cumulus Media and Signal Hill Insights' Podcast Download – April 2024 Report, conducted twice a year, surveyed 603 nationally representative respondents aged 18+ who spent at least one hour listening to or watching podcasts within the past week, and were not employed in any industries.

Why does this matter?

Better targeting and customisation of promotional strategies can be achieved by podcast creators and marketers by knowing where and how younger listeners find new podcasts. Knowing that TikTok is a top platform for this audience to discover podcasts allows content creators to concentrate on making the most of this platform to effectively reach listeners.

Our take :

In order to reach a larger audience, creators can better target their content and marketing efforts by knowing which platforms younger audiences prefer to use to discover podcasts. By using TikTok as a primary platform for exploring podcasts, creators can increase their exposure and engagement with this audience.

🎙️Unveiling Canada's Podcast Landscape in 2024: Triton Digital's Insights

The 2024 Canadian Podcast Trends Report was released today by Triton Digital, the world leader in technology and services for the broadcast radio, podcast, and digital audio sectors. Along with its monthly Canada Podcast Ranker, the report offers insights into the changing podcast landscape in Canada. These insights include top genres, downloads, debuts, sales networks, and more, as well as trends in podcast listening and a listener snapshot.

The Background :

Triton Digital is proud to release its second annual insights report for the Canadian region, covering a full year from April 2023 to March 2024. This comprehensive report delves into the Canadian podcast landscape, offering insights that complement our monthly ranker reports at www.TritonRankers.com. It offers valuable insights into podcast listening trends, popular content, audience demographics, and much more

The Revelation :

The report found that True Crime, Comedy, and News podcasts were Canada's most popular, with listeners downloading 5.9 hours per week. Other notable findings are:

  • Listeners averaged 8.2 episodes/week.

  • Mobile devices downloaded 92.9% of podcasts.

  • Top sales network in Triton Canada Podcast Ranker by average weekly download volume was SiriusXM Podcast Network, followed by Wondery Network and CBC/Radio-Canada.

  • Dateline NBC, SmartLess, and Crime Junkie were the top podcasts.

  • Based on listener ratings and download numbers, the top Canadian-made English podcasts were Front Burner, The World This Hour, and The Current.

  • Le Radiojournal (Radio Canada), Les chroniques de Pierre-Yves McSween (Cogeco Media), and Richard Martineau (QUB) were the top Canadian-made French podcasts.

Our Data and Sources :

The Canadian Podcast Report examined Triton's Podcast Metrics measures of shows and networks from the past year in the following categories: Overall, best Canadian-made English and French. Triton Digital's IAB Tech Lab-certified Podcast Metrics service analyses server log data from Omny Studio and other industry hosting platforms, and Signal Hill Insights' Canadian Podcast Listener 2023 study, supported by The Podcast Exchange, are used in the report.

Why does this matter?

This matters because it provides valuable insights into the popularity and reach of Canadian-made podcasts in both English and French languages. Understanding the trends and preferences in podcast consumption can help creators, advertisers, and platforms make informed decisions to better serve their audiences.

Our take

This data empowers podcast producers to tailor their content to the needs of their target audience, leading to higher levels of engagement. Ultimately, this will result in higher levels of engagement and contribute to the expansion of the Canadian podcasting market.
