🔥iHeart Tops Triton's U.S. Podcast Rankings with 67.4M Average Weekly Downloads
Global technology and services provider Triton Digital has announced the release of its U.S. Podcast Ranker for the May 2024 reporting period: April 29, 2024 – June 2, 2024.
The Revelation
iHeart Audience Network added in both Top Podcasts by Weekly Average Downloads and Top Podcasts by Weekly Average Users ranks. This brings the total podcasts to 150.
A bundled ranking has the iHeart Audience Network at one on the Top Sales Networks Report for May at 67.4M in average weekly downloads and 18.6M average weekly users. Secondly, SiriusXM Podcast Network had 38.5M in average weekly downloads and 12.9M in average weekly users, while third place was held by NPR with 24.6M average weekly downloads and 6.4M average weekly users.

🚨Podcasts Emerge as a Preferred News Source for Women in 2024
A new survey suggests that, in the past two years, podcast listeners in Australia have surged among Gen Z women and Baby Boomers. This was based on the Digital News Report: Australia 2024, undertaken in partnership with the News and Media Research Centre at the University of Canberra.
The Findings :
Men are more likely to have listened to a podcast in the last month than women, 44% to 35%. Meanwhile, younger generations are far more likely to have been reached by podcasts than Baby Boomers and older.
Podcast listening continues to increase, rising 2 percentage points from last year to 40%, and up a total 7 percentage points since 2022.
The older/i.e., younger the generation, the more likely the podcasts are to be listened to. However, indicating they listen to podcasts. Now, the number of Baby Boomers and older podcast listeners has gone up by 4 percent to 18 percent. For Gen X, it rose from 32 percent to 37 percent.
The average number of global consumers using podcasts has held steady, at 38%, since 2021. As for the countries that have actually increased their use of podcasts, in the last three years, this includes the UK (+9pp), Canada (+7pp), the USA (+7pp), and Spain (+7pp).
Social media sites such as Facebook and YouTube continued to be major hubs for news. In a similar vein to rising news consumption in 2024 among women, there was an increase in the number of females listening to podcasts. This almost definitely means that more timely topics relevant to women are being covered by podcasts, which, by nature, have traditionally felt underrepresented in mainstream news coverage.
The Data and Sources
The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism is an international research centre for the comparative study of journalism based at Oxford University. Coordinating a long-running global survey, this report features only one part. The Digital News Report delivers comparative data on media usage in 47 countries and across six continents.
Why does this matter?
It matters in that it displays a changing media landscape in which women need to have better representation in news stories. With the increasing popularity of podcasts, they must genuinely represent the interests and perspectives of all their audiences, including women.
Our take of the report:
This is an effective way to understand the morphing trends in the consumption of digital news and for reasoning on the need for inclusive storytelling across journalism. The report helps media companies in tailoring relevant content catering to different audiences based on their varied interests by analyzing the data.
