🔥NPR Dominates August Podcast Charts with Multiple Shows in Top 3

Triton Digital, the global technology and services leader to the digital audio and podcast industry, announced today that it has released its U.S. Podcast Ranker for August 2024, showing that iHeart Audience Network continues to reign paramount.

The Revelation : iHeart Audience Network was number one with 69.3M average weekly downloads and 19.2M average weekly users. SiriusXM Podcast Network came in second with 42.7M downloads and 14.3M users. NPR News Now and Up First ranked in the top three for both downloads and listeners.

Zoom in: New entrants like FantasyPros—Fantasy Football Podcast, Hysterical, and Noble were an exciting addition in terms of both downloads and listeners. In return, another different set of content creators, The Joe Pags Show, and Money Making Conversations Master Class, joined the fray.

Why it matters: The rankings speak to consistent leadership from iHeart Audience Network in the podcast world. Far and away leading podcast publisher by reach and engagement for its innovative content, among other strategic marketing, these numbers have shown just how critical it is to build engaging content to attract and retain listeners as podcast popularity continues to grow.

Our take as a podcast producer: This is the perfect tool to understand audience preferences and stylize our content more in tune with the preferences of listeners. It's time we leveraged this data to optimize our strategies in engaging and growing the audience base for the show.

  • In her latest blog post, Ashley Carman of Bloomberg Soundbite has some great news for podcasters! Spotify is investing more money to encourage podcasters to put their video podcasts on their platform.

  • This is one of the largest and most successful podcast studios in the Nordics, Perfect Day Media, becoming a key part of fast-growing PodX Group, through an acquisition by PodX of 100% of Perfect Day from its sister company PopHouse Entertainment.

  • Podcasting has a midroll ad problem, according to Gumball VP of Creator Partnerships Dane Cardiel: "Midroll deployment and creatives are inconsistent.

  • After making history with its 1968 television debut, 60 MINUTES is expanding both on broadcast and offline. Seth Doane, senior foreign correspondent for CBS News, will present 60 MINUTES: A SECOND LOOK, which premieres on Tuesday, September 17.

  • Iconic Asian and AAPI leaders discuss their struggles and successes in the Aconic Podcast, which premiered today on all major podcast platforms and on YouTube at @aconicpodcast.

  • New weekly global news podcast 90 Seconds to Midnight, hosted by Daily Mail Special Correspondent David Patrikarakos, launched by DMG Media today.

  • Crime House today announced Money Crimes, an original podcast powered by PAVE Studios. Financial expert and best-selling author Nicole Lapin hosts this true crime series about the world's worst financial crimes, from cutthroat con artists to billion-dollar scams and murder.

🚨 Podchaser's Collections+ Boosts Monetization for Acast Creators

Podchaser, the intelligence engine of the podcast industry, today announced that its AI-powered Collections+ targeting capability has enabled an extra 24% of Acast's podcast creators to monetize their content in its first year of operation.

The Reason: This it attributes to the improvement in Collections+, making targeting easier for the advertisers to find the right podcasts. Podchaser developed Collections+ to optimize targeting around podcasts after finding out that the majority of podcast advertisers targeted very few of their desired audiences.

Zoom In: That means 44% of all US podcast advertising investments went to the top 500 shows in 2023 alone; these account for just 12% of the total monthly audience and would suggest that 88% of the potential podcast audiences were not reached by advertisers.

Zoom Out: Since its start, Collections+ has doubled the number of verticals featuring the average show, adding more than 4,000 shows to sales categories and creating additional revenue opportunities for podcasters. This added scale for advertisers has seen half of all advertising buys for Acast use Collections+ in the first half of 2024.

Why it Matters: Bradley Davis, CEO of Podchaser, says, "Collections+ is the linchpin to making a healthy, vibrant podcast ecosystem possible. It increases podcast visibility from advertisers and allows 24% more creators to earn money from ads.".

Our take as podcast producers: Collections+ really turned the tables on podcasters from the perspective of advertisers and creators looking for success. With this additional transparency and presented income opportunities, podcast producers can refocus their attention on producing premium content while fully capitalizing on the growing ad market.

There’s a common assumption that if you’ve been a producer for long enough, you can transition seamlessly into the role of editor. But story editing involves a specific skill set and a nuanced bedside manner. In this class, you’ll learn how to think like an editor, and you’ll gain the tools to help others craft tightly woven stories. 

We’ll discuss how to evaluate pitches, help producers focus their stories, support them in the reporting process, and conduct live edits. We’ll also cover best practices for providing structural feedback and line edits at different points in the production process, and how to offer rigorous critiques without disillusioning the producer.

Geared toward producers with little or no editing experience, the course will involve hands-on practice, a few homework assignments, and a live group edit. If you’re working on a story and would like to have it edited in class, please let me know on the first day of class.
