Many studies have been released for our resources this week, and I hope they will help independent podcast producers help their clients achieve their goals. The recent Podcast Movement Evolutions Conference revealed many new innovations.

Today's Daily Brief

  • William Hanson and Jordan North will broadcast their Help I Sexted My Boss Live show at London Palladium into UK and Irish cinemas and select European cities on Tuesday, May 14, 2024. Audio Always produced and Trafalgar Releasing theatrically distributed.

  • March 2024 Buzzsprout data shows a 39% drop in Apple Podcasts downloads for podcasters. Spotify fell 11%. Only 1% fewer Buzzsprout podcasts are active.

  • Despite January experiencing the highest rate of debuts since March 2024, the number of new podcasts launching during the first quarter decreased by 4.5% compared to the previous year. According to Listen Notes, a total of 47,921 podcasts were launched in the first quarter of this year.

  • Stephanie Kuo has been promoted to VP of Content at PRX, the public media company, after gaining valuable experience working with audio creators globally for the past six years.

Two of LiSTNR's original podcasts, which are produced in Australia, have achieved a remarkable feat on a global scale by being nominated for the esteemed New York Festivals Radio Awards.Secrets We Keep: Shame, Lies & Family, the brand-new, original audio docuseries from the LiSTNR News team, is a nominee in two categories: Narrative or Documentary Podcast and Documentary: Social Issues. Furthermore, the Gripped: You Don't Know Me audio drama team has received a nomination in the Mystery Podcast category.The New York Festivals Radio Awards has been celebrating world-class storytellers for 68 years, recognising innovation and excellence in broadcast audio content across all genres and platforms globally. The 2024 winners will be announced at the Storytellers Gala virtual ceremony on 16 April, 2024.

Last year, LiSTNR’s The Children in the Pictures won GOLD in the Narrative/Documentary Podcasts category at the same awards, against a shortlist of 30 of the world’s greatest documentary makers including the BBC, ABC in Australia, ESPN, Crooked Media, and Radio Canada. [ Continue Reading]

đź’Ą Podcast 18-34 Reach Now Matches TV, Female Podcast Habituation Reachs All-Time High, And Edison Research's Infinite Dial 2024: The One Slide Every Marketer Must Have

Edison Research released their annual Infinite Dial study last week. Edison Research began the Infinite Dial Study in 1998 to study how Americans use new audio and media. In the first 1998 study, few consumers had tried dial-up audio streaming. 26 years later, the Infinite Dial is the longest-running consumer digital audio study. Edison Research's 2024 Infinite Dial study offers marketers and media agencies compelling insights: Takeaways for marketers:

  • Podcasting is no longer niche: Instead of “test and learn” experimental buys, podcasting should be part of media plans. 135 million Americans (47% of 12+) are contacted monthly. Monthly reach is low 60% for 18-34, 18-49, and 25-54 demographics.

  • TV budgets could be diverted to podcasting since podcast 18-34 reach is as high. Brands targeting women should highlight podcasts in media plans: Female podcast audiences are at record highs in reach and habitency.

  • Use Arnie Semsky's “5% solution” for podcasts: Give podcasts 5% of digital ads. Podcasts now reach 18-34s as well as TV. Not long ago, marketers dismissed podcasts for lack of scale. No more. Edison's 2024 Infinite Dial podcast weekly reach (48%) is nearly as high as TV (50%), among 18-34s. AM/FM radio dominates 18-34 weekly reach at 77%. A recent study highlights the potential of audio platforms in effectively reaching diverse audiences, including AAPI, Black, and Latino listeners, as well as multicultural LGBTQ+ communities. SiriusXM Media recently conducted a study on Cultural Pride Soundboard, highlighting the power of audio in keeping these communities connected to their cultural heritage. From soothing music to captivating podcasts, audio serves as a medium for comfort and storytelling. Given the increasing diversity of the U.S. population, the study suggests that advertisers should adopt year-round marketing strategies to reach beyond the general market. The study, conducted by SiriusXM, reveals insights that highlight the importance of broadcast radio and other audio outlets in reaching diverse audiences. "The artists and hosts serve as ambassadors, embodying our culture and sharing its creativity, joy, and influence across the globe," states the study. Connecting with multicultural audiences through audio can enable advertisers to tap into positive emotions and associations. Supporting multicultural creators helps to build brand awareness and foster connections with AAPI, Black, and Hispanic communities. The study on the Cultural Pride Soundboard finds that music plays a significant role in facilitating self-expression among multicultural audiences. Based on the listener survey, a significant majority of these groups feel a strong connection between music and culture. They express pride in seeing and listening to artists who represent them and their community, and they feel a sense of pride when their culture is showcased in mainstream media.
