The findings of a new study conducted by Acast, the largest independent podcast company in the world, show that US consumers highly trust podcasts as a medium. According to a study of US consumers, more than any other media personality tested, 64% of podcast listeners actively seek out podcasters and create time for their content, making the time spent with podcasts highly engaging and intentional.

These findings come at a time when trust in US media has reached an all-time low, with research from Gallup and the Knight Foundation reporting that half of Americans think national news organisations intentionally mislead them. Podcasters are becoming the media industry's reliable sources of information in this age of scepticism and false information.

In fact, more people trust podcasters than any other tested medium, according to Acast's research, at 50% of listeners. YouTubers are the second most trusted group, according to 44% of YouTube users who use the service. Notably, many of these popular YouTube personalities are also podcasters as YouTube becomes a top platform for listening to podcasts.

Because of social unrest, conflicting news coverage of the same events, and other factors, trust in the US media has been declining recently. US consumers are increasingly turning to podcasters as a source of truth as they have lost faith in traditional media, according to Tommy Walters, director of research and insights at Acast. "At Acast, we consistently observe audiences turning to podcasts for in-depth discussions and analysis over clickbait headlines during difficult and uncertain times, such as the start of the pandemic and the beginning of the war in Ukraine. We have also observed that audiences place more faith in podcaster product recommendations than any other form of media when it comes to product endorsements.

Gen Z was our fastest-growing cohort in terms of music and podcast listening in the first half of 2023, with over 560 billion songs and more than 3 billion podcast episodes listened to.

They were also twice as likely to respond, "a song, album, or podcast that I love and listen to repeatedly," as opposed to some of the biggest events that dominated news or social media headlines, when asked to name the biggest cultural event of the previous year.

Over 551 million people use Spotify to listen to music for their daily lives. Their interest in the creators who are advancing culture is reflected in their engagement with our collection of over 100 million songs, 5 million podcasts (including 100,000+ video podcasts), and 350,000 audiobooks.

Because of this, the day following the film's premiere, global streams of Spotify's Barbie Official Playlist increased by 1,560%. In addition to creating podcast communities (we hear you, Wrighty's House listeners), fan clubs around playlists and charts (from K-Pop stans to Brazilian funk fans), and devoted superfan groups for creators (#DaddyGang), Spotify users spend an average of over 2.4 hours per day with the service.

The multi-platform production studio within Headspace, Headspace Studios, has joined the company's podcast portfolio, according to a recent announcement from AdLarge. With the addition of Sunday Scaries, Radio Headspace, and Dear Headspace to AdLarge's Sales Portfolio, Headspace is expanding its offering of podcasts with a focus on mental health, wellness, and mindfulness.

Dear Headspace, a first of its kind for the industry, allows individuals to submit questions about various common challenges, including relationships, grief, family, and starting their meditation journey, with episodes releasing every Tuesday.

Radio Headspace is a daily mindfulness microcast that encourages listeners to pause, reflect, and explore our shared human experience and how to live up to our limitless potential, co-hosted by Headspace’s popular mindfulness and meditation teachers. Sunday Scaries by Headspace, led by mindfulness and meditation teacher, Dora Kamau, helps listeners reframe their anxiety and approach the work and school week with a positive outlook through weekly mini-meditations every Sunday.
