The marketing consensus is shorter content is better. As attention is scarce in an attention economy, advertisers believe that keeping content brief, regardless of message, will increase views, streams, and engagement. Podcasts are a proven exception that is making advertisers reconsider. Research shows that people spend over seven hours per week listening to podcasts, and Gen Zers complete 80% of 50-minute episodes. Ad spend is matching cultural behaviour: Podcasts will earn $2 billion in ad revenue for the first time in 2024 and $3 billion by 2028. [Read more]

🚨iOS 17 Launch Sees Fewer Downloads but Promises Better Ad Performance

For most publishers, the release of iOS 17 has resulted in fewer downloads; however, the pain of lower numbers has been lessened by the prospect of better ad performance. Even though it's still early, the most recent data from Podscribe suggests that the trade-off might be starting to pay off. In the last few months of 2018, Podscribe reported a slight improvement in ad performance; the company claims that these gains persisted primarily into the first quarter of this year. According to Podscribe, visitor rates from impression-based campaigns performed "similarly" in the first quarter as they did in the fourth, with the exception of a slight fractional decline. Other data, though, showed even greater promise. Between Q4 and Q1, episodic campaign visitor rates performed 12% better than the previous quarter. The report states that "between episodic and impression-based campaigns, there was a clear difference in conversion rates in the first quarter." "Our research indicates that episodic campaigns outperform impression-based campaigns in terms of listener conversion by 86%." According to Podscribe, the conversion rate for impression-based campaigns was 0.02%, while the rate for episode-based campaigns was 0.04%. Other high-level metrics, such as overall podcast ad conversion rates and website visitor rates, remained stable between the fourth and first quarters, according to the report. [Read more]
