PODMATCH
🔥2024 Podcast Industry Report: Why Only 6.42% of Shows Succeed (And How to Join Them

PODMATCH

Image: Podmatch

The podcasting industry changed: only 6.42% of podcasters make it to 100 episodes, but that small number of podcasters accounted for 95% of the total listenership.

With a total of 504.9 million listeners in 2024, new podcasters have a big opportunity in an unsaturated market where only 14% of the total podcasts are active.

This Podmatch report narrows down the focus to independent podcasters alone this November 2024, eliminating the celebrity and network shows to give specific performance data.

The Key points:

  • There are 381,627 active podcasts: a growth of 1.6%, which represents 14.11% of the total 2.7 million podcasts.

  • Projected podcast listeners for 2024: 504.9 million (+8.6% growth)

  • Only 22.9% of interview-based podcasts remain active, which is a struggle very unique to the genre of podcasts.

  • The average podcast gets 44 guest requests daily.

  • This usually takes two years with 100 episodes to build up a viewership and grant podcasters credibility in the industry that leads to more views and monetizing opportunities.

Why It Matters: The nature of the podcasting industry is such that even though listenership is growing, the number of active podcasts does not grow in correspondence. It is an exceptional opportunity for a dedicated creator who can get over the hump and sustain a podcast. Examples of such successful podcasters who have risen over the obstacles and received recognition may be shown to impress positive influence brought in by creators' persistence in the industry.

The Big Picture:

For Podcasters:

  • Success metrics now clear: 2 years/100 episodes benchmark

  • Huge potential audience, 504.9 million listeners, with relatively low competition

  • This is a good networking opportunity as evidenced by high demand for guest appearances.

For Producers:

  • High-engagement growth market for its listeners

  • Data transparency into which hosting platforms perform the best

  • Serve the 93.58% needing help in reaching milestones of success

For the Industry:

  • Listenership is growing healthily despite attrition among content creators.

  • The market still isn't saturated with new quality content.

  • There is strong potential that independent podcasting will become increasingly professionalized, moving toward organized and revenue-generating approaches for independent podcasters.

PODCAST INSIGHTS

Study Reveals Podcast Listeners Drive Auto Parts Sales: Audio Advertising Outperforms TV

Cumulus Media | Westwood One Audio Active Group

Image: Cumulus Media | Westwood One Audio Active Group

AM/FM radio and podcasts have become significant platforms for auto aftermarket advertising, outperforming traditional TV, according to a study by Cumulus Media | Westwood One Audio Active Group®.

The research, commissioned by MARU/Matchbox, found that heavy audio listeners are not just casual shoppers but are the key to reaching big spenders in the auto parts market. They make more frequent purchases and show higher brand recall than TV-watching consumers, according to the study.

The Key Points:

  • Heavy podcast and radio listeners report spending an average of $500 more on auto parts each year versus TV viewers-a tremendous gulf in purchasing.

  • Audio drives significantly better lift for retailer ad recall and shopping frequency.

  • AM/FM radio has a huge 86% share of in-car ad-supported audio

  • Ultra-heavy auto parts shoppers are 60% more likely to be heavy AM/FM radio listeners

  • Audio effectively reaches three key segments: mega-milers, do-it-yourselfers, and ultra-heavy shoppers

Why It Matters: This information proves to businesses and marketers in the car aftermarket that audio platforms aren't just supplementary channels for advertising; they are actually choice real estate to reach the most valued customers. The research indicates more listeners in audio are actively employed, frequent drivers, and big spenders of money; thus, they are the ideal target for auto parts retailers.

The Big Picture: This is huge for podcasters and audio content creators alike. For podcast producers, this cements audio as a premium platform for advertising and may mean more ad revenue coming in from the auto aftermarket sector. More importantly, the industry at large will benefit from real proof that audio outperforms in driving better ad results, giving them more brand awareness, higher ROI for advertisers, and a move toward more personalized and targeted marketing efforts.

EDISON RESEARCH
🚨Edison Research Reveals Dramatic Shifts in Q3 2024 Podcast Rankings

edison research

Image: Edison Research

Podcasts are a sea change. New entrants like MrBallen nailed audiences with his spine-chilling stories, while The MeidasTouch Podcast has the political discourse swaying in a different direction altogether. MrBallen tells spine-tingling stories, and the political juggernaut of The MeidasTouch Podcast makes for an interesting reshaping of listener preferences.

Equally striking is KILL TONY's entry at #41. Edison Research's Q3 2024 Edison Podcast Metrics™ report offers dynamic change at the top of the podcast charts, but still with some leadership holdovers. Data includes all weekly podcast listeners aged 13 and above for an accurate and total picture of the United States' podcast consumption habits.

The Key Points:

  • Joe Rogan Experience, Crime Junkie, and The Daily hold on to their top-three positions as

  • SmartLess finally joined the Top 5 for the first time under SiriusXM.

  • MrBallen Podcast joined the Top 10 at #9

  • The continued growth of political content, with MeidasTouch Podcast at #28

  • Business-related content on the rise at How I Built This joined at #35

Why It Matters: Think of it like a real-life snapshot of what millions of Americans are actually tuning into, not just what's being touted. That data helps advertisers know where to put their money, helps creators to know what types of content are resonating with audiences, and informs listeners of trending shows they might enjoy. This is analogous to having a Nielsen ratings system designed for podcasts, but even deeper because the monitor covers all podcasts, not just those who opt-in.

Big Picture: Major opportunities in various genres are underlined by this quarterly report for podcasters and producers. The success of fresh voices is reflected in a Top 10 debut by newcomers like MrBallen and the rapid rise of The LOL Podcast. Besides, a surge in popularity of political and business podcasts speaks volumes about the taste of the audience, which is getting an evolving twist day by day. Growth in various Top 50 podcasts entertainments, news, true crime, and business entertainment signals to an ever-expanding marketplace that is opening for various genres of content.
