🎧IAB/PwC Report Reveals Shift in Podcast Ad Spend
Advertisers are benefiting from the industry's wider embrace of digital as many radio companies look to expand their podcast divisions. B2B and performance advertisers use on-demand audio to drive brand metrics.
The changing patterns of investment show how podcasts have evolved from a direct response-focused medium to one that is preferred by brand advertisers. According to the IAB/PwC podcast ad revenue report from the previous year, brand advertisers now account for the majority of podcast ad spend, which is a major shift from earlier trends.
The rise in Nielsen brand lift studies is a key indicator of this shift. Nielsen has conducted over 1,300 podcast brand lift studies since 2017, providing advertisers with valuable insights into podcast advertising's long-term brand perception impact. Signal Hill's 2024 Branded Podcast Benchmark Report found that 61% of listeners viewed the sponsoring brand more favourably. The report attributed this resonance to content authenticity, educational value, enthusiasm, and inspiration. Entertainment-driven podcasts retain listeners and encourage recommendations. Listeners were 65% likely to watch another episode and 64% likely to recommend it.

The annual Clue Awards, which recognise the best in true-crime content, have revealed their nominees. Two podcast awards are given out as part of the annual CrimeCon event: one for Outstanding Podcast Docuseries and another for Outstanding Episodic Series. Audible, School of Humans, Hurrdat Media, iHeartMedia, CBC Podcasts, LAist Studios, and Paramount are among the nominees. The candidates are as follows:Podcast: Outstanding Episodic Series

At the upcoming IAB Podcast Upfront, which is happening on 9 May, we're likely to see presentations go beyond previewing content to include ad tech and multi-channel campaigns, especially as the popularity of podcasts distributed on YouTube and other video platforms continues to climb.
Annual podcast ad revenue has been on the rise, and the outlook for this year remains positive, according to Sarah Bolton, EVP of business intelligence at the media research company Advertiser Perceptions. In a survey of 250 digital audio advertisers, the company found that in both 2022 and 2023, about 40% of podcast spend was in the form of an upfront buy, Bolton said. [ Read more - Alyssa Meyers]

Tenderfoot TV operates profitable true-crime franchises like Up and Vanished, Monster, and To Live or Die in LA, but co-founder Donald Albright says the podcast business is evolving and the company wants to use those brands in new ways. He says Tenderfoot TV now prioritises larger franchises to attract advertisers and subscribers.
Vox Media is launching a third podcast with NYU marketing professor turned podcast host Scott Galloway. Starting May 20, Prof G Markets, a weekly feature on The Prof G Pod, will be a standalone series. Financial news and the stock market will dominate the weekly series, released Mondays and Thursdays.
