🚀 Goodbye, Hot Pod

The final issue of Hot Pod, written by the Ariel Shapiro, offers a reflection on the industry and its growth. Ariel reflects on the excitement and anxiety that came with starting the podcasting industry two years ago, despite the talent deals and M&A happenings. Podcasting is still in its infancy, but it is becoming an increasingly integral part of the public's media diet.

Today is my last day at The Verge, and this will be my final issue of Hot Pod. I’ll have one more story coming out in the next week or two. But until then, I wanted to offer some parting thoughts on the industry I have covered so closely for the past two years. - Ariel

Podcasting has been affected by macro forces that have resulted in layoffs and closures across media, with investments drying up and every project needing to be profitable to survive. Some shows that have adapted to the new landscape and made it work include Normal Gossip, Unholy: Two Jews on the News, and Decoder Ring. Despite the challenges, Ariel is hopeful that creators in this industry will continue to innovate. The definition of a podcast has changed, with it becoming more of an aesthetic than a format. As Ariel moves on from Hot Pod, She will miss the community and the opportunity to have a real conversation with their audience.

EDITOR: I wanted to use this opportunity to convey my sincere gratitude. Our newsletter would not exist without yours, and I am so grateful for your commitment to podcasting. 🙌

🚨Getting ready for the election, reducing the effect of the UK's general election on revenueBy Andrew Goldsmith, CEO Adelicious

The UK General Elections happen in November, and they are likely to mess up the schedules for ads and income for podcast creators. The UK government's dissolution started the pre-election period, which limits how much the government can spend on ads. This affects businesses like network providers, streamers, mortgage lenders, and pension funds. If there is a change of government after the election, it may be hard to get across key messages and campaign activities because of the uncertainty. In the US, on the other hand, there are no limits on how much the government can spend. However, political parties are not allowed to spend money on TV ads during this time. A more fragmented way of getting political content is emerging in the UK media landscape, with social media playing a major role. More people are listening because podcasts are becoming more popular, especially among Gen Z. Popular podcasts might make less money from ads during the election season, but podcasters should plan their content, schedule, and expectations ahead of time to avoid drops in ad spend.

As a way to get ready, you might want to think about non-political content, government-based activities, alternative brands and advertisers, non-partisan content for talk shows, and starting campaigns again when things get back to normal. You should also think about other ways to make money, such as subscriptions, merchandise sales, and live events. By making plans ahead of time, podcasters can make up for possible drops in ad spending during the election. [ Read more ]
