🎧Podcasts Capture 37% of Young Adults' Ad-Supported Audio Time

One in five US ad-supported audio minutes are podcasts. Younger listeners are more likely to listen to them. Nielsen and Edison Research jointly publish “The Record,” a quarterly audience consumption report. It shows that 18- to 34-year-olds spent 37% of their first-quarter ad-supported audio listening on podcasts. The report says that 25- to 54-year-olds, the group most used by ad buyers, listen to podcasts 25% of the time.

Two-thirds of Americans aged 18 and older listen to broadcast radio. Nielsen and Edison say that radio's podcast lead is small among 18- to 34-year-olds. Podcasts account for 37% of listening time, but young adults still listen to AM/FM radio 45%.

In addition to podcasts, Nielsen and Edison say 10% of ad-supported media listening was streaming audio. For 18- to 34-year-olds, who may prefer subscription services over ad-supported streaming audio, the figure is 15%. [Read more]

🔥 Advertising ROI: The Role of Audio in Driving Profit

Released last week, a major new study on marketing effectiveness by media agencies EssenceMediacom, Mindshare, and Wavemaker UK, along with measurement firms Gain Theory and Ebiquity, is called Profit Ability 2: The New Business Case for Advertising. The analysis shows how, over time, advertising generates profit.

According to the study, investing one dollar in audio (streaming, podcasts, or AM/FM radio) will yield three to thirteen weeks' worth of profit, or $3.12. Sixty-nine cents will be made on every dollar invested in audio over the course of the two-year period (one week to two years).According to the Profit Ability 2 study, Audio outperforms all digital platforms, ranking #3 in terms of investment to profit generated. Sound punches well beyond its weight. Audio accounts for 1.12% of profits at 1% of the media budget.[Read more ]

🚨Jacobs Media's Techsurvey Reveals Podcast Trends Among Radio Listeners

Jacobs Media's annual Techsurvey finds that AM/FM radio's biggest listeners spend 4% of their audio time listening to their favourite radio station's podcasts. Podcasts are heard weekly by 31% of core radio listeners. It's down two points from last year. "We actually see podcasting slipping a little bit," said Fred Jacobs, Jacobs Media president. “I know that flies in the face of some of the other research that you may have seen, but among this core radio audience, podcasts are not super popular,” he said on a webinar last week. Age makes a big difference in radio listening. Techsurvey reports that half of Millennial radio listeners listen to podcasts weekly, compared to 23% of Baby Boomers.“They are massively different,” Jacobs said. “Two-to-one difference in reach. That's good to know if you're programming to Millennials or Boomers. [Read more]
