Industry Partnership Signals Growing Institutional Recognition
Acast, the world’s largest pure-play podcast company, has made history by becoming the first global platform to join Spain’s Academia de las Artes, las Ciencias y la Industria del Audio en Español (Audio Academy). This strategic partnership represents a significant milestone in the professionalization and institutional recognition of Spain’s rapidly growing podcast sector.
Supporting Spain’s Audio Industry Development
The Audio Academy, established in 2025, was created to consolidate Spanish-language audio as both a cultural and economic industry while supporting its professionalization and strengthening institutional representation. Acast’s membership aligns with these objectives and demonstrates the company’s commitment to fostering a robust podcast ecosystem in Spain.
“For Acast, joining the Audio Academy is a way to support the development of a strong, professional and institutionally recognised podcast ecosystem,” said Megan Davies, Managing Director, International, at Acast. “We’re proud to announce our membership at a time when the Academy’s work is beginning to deliver results, including the recent commitment from Spain’s Ministry of Culture to open a joint working group aimed at advancing the recognition of audio as a cultural industry.”
Government Recognition Follows Industry Efforts
This partnership comes on the heels of a major development for Spain’s audio industry: the Spanish Ministry of Culture’s recent commitment to establishing a dedicated audio working group. This governmental recognition represents a crucial step toward legitimizing podcasting as a vital cultural industry within Spain’s institutional framework.
Ricardo Dómine, President of the Audio Academy, welcomed Acast’s participation as “a very significant milestone for the industry as a whole.” He emphasized that having a global platform of Acast’s scale join the initiative strengthens ongoing efforts to promote professionalization, cohesion, and institutional recognition of Spanish-language audio.
Acast’s Global Impact and Innovation
Since its founding in 2014, Acast has been instrumental in transforming the podcasting landscape. The company introduced dynamic ad insertion technology, a key innovation that enabled podcast monetization at scale and helped democratize revenue opportunities for creators when podcasting was still considered a niche format without clear revenue models.
Today, Acast’s platform connects more than 140,000 creators with 4,000 advertisers globally, operating offices in 15 countries. This extensive network positions the company uniquely to support the development of Spain’s podcast industry through both technological expertise and market connections.
Looking Ahead
Dómine expressed hope that Acast’s membership will inspire other platforms and media organizations across the sector to join this collective effort, potentially creating a ripple effect that could further strengthen the Spanish-language audio industry’s institutional standing and professional development.
This partnership signals a broader trend toward industry consolidation and professionalization in the global podcasting space, with established platforms taking active roles in supporting regional market development and regulatory recognition.
