About the Role
Slate Magazine is seeking a versatile and capable Assistant Producer to help create our critically acclaimed podcast Decoder Ring, hosted by Willa Paskin. This is an exceptional opportunity for someone with a passion for audio storytelling and an eye for untold stories grounded in pop culture and big ideas.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with a host and team of producers to conceive and develop episodes
- Identify promising storylines, characters, and sound-rich tape opportunities
- Contribute to research, reporting, and interview preparation
- Edit rough cuts and implement script notes quickly and sensitively
- Find and curate archival tape and other old media clips
- Arrange interviews and oversee recording sessions, often over remote connections
- Contribute to scoring and sound design of mixes
About You
The ideal candidate has an affinity for audio storytelling and a natural interest in adding perspective and context to complicated narratives. You have an eye for historical oddities and stories hiding in plain sight, as well as an ear for good tape. You enjoy spending hours scouring archives and old media for the perfect clips and can move adroitly between booking, recording, writing, editing, tracking, mixing, and creative troubleshooting. You are a strong writer with an excellent ear, can integrate multiple rounds of notes, and turn around careful edits on tight deadlines. You must be a self-starter who is efficient, personable, and open to experimentation.
Requirements
- At least two years’ experience in radio or podcast production
- Excellent writing and audio editing skills
- Strong project management abilities
- Collaborative work style
This position can be located in Slate’s New York or Washington, D.C. office, with remote work considered for the right candidate. This is a position covered under a collective bargaining agreement between Slate and the Writers Guild of America East.
