About the Role

The Student Media Staff members support JCCC’s mission by being responsible for the multi-platform storytelling and promotion of The Messenger, the college’s official student news website. This role offers a professional-grade laboratory environment where student incumbents apply skills in journalism, digital media production, and marketing to engage a diverse campus audience. Working within a collaborative newsroom structure, the incumbent will specialize in a specific medium—such as social media management, investigative reporting, photography, or digital design—while gaining cross-functional experience in professional media tools and AP style standards.

Available Positions

  • Podcast Producer: Creates content concepts for multiple weekly podcasting shows by working with Messenger’s editors and reporters. Needs to be active on campus to meet with people to bring on the show.
  • Video/Audio Editor: Uses non-linear editing software to edit raw videos and podcasts (both video and audio-only) into cohesive, timely and accessible content.
  • Social Media Production Editor: Responsible for content creation, branding content, news content and social media management on all social media platforms.
  • Social Media News Reporter: Relays campus news on social media through vertical video and text.
  • Copy Editor: Oversees proofreading and AP style adherence of all written content, including articles, videos and podcast previews.
  • Senior Photographer: Captures still and video images for digital stories and print products.
  • News Reporter (3 positions): Covers campus news, life and sports through features, previews, and creative content.
  • PR/Marketing: Plans events, manages partnerships, and contributes to social media content strategy.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Must be enrolled in at least six (6) credit hours at JCCC each semester
  • Maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA
  • Demonstrate writing/editing skills (may include a writing test during interview)
  • Knowledge of media types (print, video, social media, etc.)

Work schedule varies depending on department needs, up to 12 hours per week. When applying, please express interest in one or more specific positions in your cover letter.
