CASE STUDY: Creating an Award-Winning Audio BlockbusterProject: All Things Undone (Scripted Fiction Podcast Series)Studio: Aileron Podcast Studio / Aileron FilmsRole: Director, Producer, Executive Producer, and Sound/Art Designer (Joel Peissig)
Executive Summary
Aileron Podcast Studio set out to produce a cinematic, premium audio fiction series that broke away from conventional talk-radio formats. By pairing complex, Afro-futuristic storytelling by writer Chené Lawson with Hollywood-grade sound design and strategic marketing, All Things Undone scaled the charts organically. The project ultimately outperformed massive, studio-backed industry titans to capture the highest honor in digital media.
The Challenge
Audiences have short attention spans on digital job platforms, and the fictional audio market is saturated. To launch a revolutionary alternate-history narrative—where an 1850 solar eclipse alters human DNA and renders Black people “unkillable”—the studio faced three critical hurdles:Immersive World-Building Without Visuals: Conveying the heavy historical and supernatural elements without the aid of visual media.Balancing Brutal Realism with Speculative Fiction: Handling sensitive, emotionally intense historical settings while maintaining a gripping sci-fi pace.Breaking Through the Noise: Achieving chart placement and critical industry recognition with independent studio distribution.
1.The Strategy & Execution1. Cinematic Sound Architecture
Instead of relying on basic narration, Aileron engineered an immersive, 3D acoustic landscape. We directed a highly skilled cast and integrated intricate, multi-layered sound design (developed alongside sound designer Bill Chesley). Custom ambient audio and a powerful original score by composer Will Richter were designed to pull listeners directly into the 1850s environment.
2. High-Utility Story Architecture & Narrative PacingAs a director and producer, Joel Peissig meticulously mapped the show’s structure. Heavy emotional arcs, high-stakes action sequence audio, and deep, supernatural lore were strictly structured across high-impact episodes to maximize listener retention and build an addictive “cliffhanger” cadence.
3. Hollywood-Grade Brand Identity & PositioningLeveraging 20+ years of ad agency and commercial film experience, Aileron treated the audio launch like a major theatrical rollout. We crafted premium key art, an elite-tier trailer, and cross-platform promotional assets that established the show’s identity as a prestige, must-listen production before an episode ever aired.
