Micro.blog, a independent blogging platform, has expanded its Studio subscription service with new video and podcasting features, including automatic YouTube cross-posting and the ability to extract audio from videos for podcast RSS feeds. The updates, released July 27, aim to provide creators with open-standard alternatives to proprietary video and audio platforms.
The platform now allows users to upload videos up to 20 minutes in length that stream immediately on their blogs. Videos can be automatically cross-posted to YouTube, Bluesky and PeerTube without manual uploading to each platform. Micro.blog can extract audio from uploaded videos as MP3 files and attach them to podcast RSS feeds, allowing podcast players that support HLS podcasting to seamlessly switch between video and audio versions of the same episode.
Micro.blog founder Manton Reece positioned the announcement as part of a broader industry movement toward open standards in podcasting and video hosting. “For too long, we’ve let YouTube, TikTok, and other silos dominate video hosting,” Reece said. “These silos have now leveraged the popularity of podcasting to control even more video. The way forward could not be more clear. Podcast clients should support both video and audio based on open standards.”
The new features address a long-standing challenge in podcast and video production: the fragmentation of content across multiple platforms and the dominance of centralized services. By enabling creators to publish first to their own blogs and then distribute to social networks, Micro.blog is positioning itself as a hub for independent creators seeking to maintain control over their content distribution while still reaching audiences on major platforms.
The announcement comes as podcast platforms continue experimenting with video integration. Many podcast apps have moved to streaming rather than downloading audio files, shifting the technical landscape that RSS-based podcasting was built upon. Video podcasting remains less standardized than audio, with most video shows distributed through YouTube or proprietary platforms rather than podcast feeds. Micro.blog’s approach of supporting both formats through open standards represents a counterweight to that concentration.
In Studio, creators can enable a “Save podcast audio” checkbox in blog settings to activate MP3 extraction from video uploads. The platform’s default RSS template now includes a parameter that links audio and video versions of episodes through the podcast:alternateEnclosure tag, allowing compatible podcast players to offer both formats. Micro.blog also recently added an automatic audio leveling feature that adjusts podcast sound levels without requiring external processing tools.
For podcast producers and audio professionals, the tools address practical workflow challenges. Creators who produce video content no longer need separate editing and export processes to generate podcast feeds. The cross-posting capability reduces the manual labor of distributing videos across multiple social platforms. However, adoption depends on whether podcast apps implement support for video alternatives and whether creators embrace publishing to independent blogs rather than uploading directly to YouTube or other centralized platforms. The announcement signals an ongoing tension in the podcast industry between open, decentralized RSS-based distribution and the convenience and reach of proprietary streaming platforms.
