New Podcast Puts UK’s Neurodivergent Community in the Spotlight

A new podcast is set to transform how neurodiversity conversations happen in the UK, bringing together lived experience, clinical science, and recognizable voices to challenge long-held misconceptions around ADHD, autism, and mental health.

Unmasked with Dr Basra launches on October 10—World Mental Health Day—with a mission to make discussions about neurodiversity part of everyday conversation, not just clinical spaces. Hosted by consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist Dr Jagdish Basra, the podcast represents a significant step toward destigmatizing conversations around ADHD, autism, and broader mental health concerns.

Addressing a Gap in Public Understanding

Dr Basra founded the show through her Glasgow-based psychiatry practice, Diverse Diagnostics, after years of witnessing families reach crisis point while waiting for assessment and support. Research estimates that 15–20% of adults in the UK are neurodivergent, encompassing conditions including ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and Tourette syndrome. Yet despite widespread discussion, many people remain confused about what neurodiversity actually looks like in daily life.

“There is so much discussion about ADHD and autism, but people can still be left with conflicting information, stereotypes and assumptions,” Dr Basra explains. “I wanted to create a space where people can tell their stories honestly while we explain the science behind those experiences in an accessible way.”

Real Stories, Real Science

The podcast format—as shown in the striking branding captured in promotional materials—emphasizes the tagline “Real people. Real conversations. Real science.” This approach sets Unmasked with Dr Basra apart from purely clinical content by weaving together personal narratives with evidence-based explanations.

The launch episode features Scottish influencer SEN Mum Lucy Gallacher (@senmumlucy_), who brings her experience as a neurodivergent parent raising neurodivergent children. Her episode explores neurodiversity within families, parenting identity, and the realities of advocating for children with additional support needs. Opening weeks will also feature a leading figure from Scottish professional football discussing men’s mental health and the pressures inherent in elite sport.

Beyond Medical Expertise

Dr Basra’s background extends beyond clinical psychiatry. She has previously worked with professional footballers and coaches through UEFA coaching education courses, exploring mental health and performance psychiatry. This interdisciplinary perspective will help the podcast address neurodiversity across multiple life domains—work, education, relationships, and personal strengths—rather than focusing solely on diagnosis and treatment.

“You should not need a medical degree to understand what ADHD or autism can mean for a person or family,” Dr Basra notes. “We want to talk about the difficult parts, but also relationships, parenting, work, education and people’s strengths. Hearing somebody describe an experience that feels familiar can be powerful, particularly for people who would not normally listen to something about psychiatry or mental health.”

A Response to Healthcare Delays

The podcast emerges from a practical need. Diverse Diagnostics was established precisely because NHS waiting lists for neurodiversity assessments have become prohibitively long. The clinic began by serving children but has since expanded to adult services, now delivering ADHD, autism, and wider mental health assessments and support across the UK—much of it delivered online for accessibility.

By putting neurodivergent voices at the center of public discourse, Unmasked with Dr Basra aims to reach far beyond people already engaged with specialist services, helping normalize conversations that millions of UK families navigate daily.
