The Rest Is Politics Launches Gen Z Series After Major Audience Research

Major Generational Divide Revealed in Podcast Research

The Rest Is Politics has launched a new members-only series exploring Generation Z after conducting one of the largest audience surveys in UK podcast history. More than 12,000 listeners participated in research that reveals striking differences between how older generations perceive Gen Z and how young people see themselves.

The series, titled ‘The Rest Is Politics presents…The Gen Z Story’, features journalist Vicky Spratt investigating the political and social pressures facing Britain’s young adults, as shown in the vibrant promotional artwork featuring megaphones and speech bubbles on a bright blue background.

Research Reveals Stark Perception Gap

The survey findings highlight a significant disconnect between generations. Older respondents most commonly described Gen Z as “entitled” (cited by 192 people), followed by “anxious” and “lost.” Other frequent descriptions included “unlucky,” “challenged,” “struggling,” and “misunderstood.”

In contrast, when Gen Z respondents aged 23-29 described themselves, “resilient” topped the list, followed by “misunderstood,” “lost,” “tired,” and “anxious.” This self-perception as resilient rather than entitled represents a fundamental generational misunderstanding.

Surprising Cross-Generational Support

Despite the perception gap, the research revealed unexpected solidarity from older listeners:

  • 73.6% of older respondents agreed that young people’s struggles are as serious as claimed, not exaggerated
  • 84.3% expressed worry about Gen Z’s job prospects and earning potential
  • 60.2% would support policies reducing their own wealth if it improved young people’s prospects

More than 9 in 10 Gen Z respondents acknowledged social media’s negative impact on mental health, with 58% strongly agreeing it’s harmful.

High-Profile Political Interview

The series features an exclusive interview with former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, who resigned in 2025 over tax affairs and has made few public comments since. Rayner, who pushed through controversial reforms including votes for 16-year-olds during her time in government, chose to speak about Gen Z because “they are our future.”

“That whole generation at the moment feels, no matter how much you run on the treadmill, you are not going to make it,” Rayner explained, highlighting the economic frustrations driving young people’s political disengagement.

Student Discount Initiative

Alongside the series launch, The Rest Is Politics is offering UK students annual premium membership for £20, providing access to all member series, ad-free listening, and early access to live show tickets. Students can redeem using university email addresses ending in .edu, .ac.uk, or .edu.au.

Podcast Industry Implications

This initiative demonstrates how major podcasts are leveraging audience research to create targeted content while building deeper engagement with specific demographics. The series, produced by Goalhanger, represents a significant investment in understanding and serving younger audiences often overlooked by mainstream political media.

The research methodology and scale—over 12,000 respondents—sets a new standard for audience engagement in the UK podcast industry, showing how successful shows can use their platforms for meaningful social research while creating compelling content.
