The Society of Editors opened entries Monday for its 2026 Media Freedom Awards, expanding the program to 22 categories that recognize journalism serving the public interest across print, broadcast, digital, magazine and emerging news platforms including podcasts.
Entries opened July 6, 2026, with submissions closing August 16, 2026. The awards, now in their fifth year, recognize excellence in investigative reporting, campaigning and community journalism from across the United Kingdom’s news media. New categories for 2026 include Scoop of the Year and Social Media Journalist of the Year, joining returning categories such as Investigation of the Year, Political Journalist of the Year and Commentator of the Year. The awards ceremony will take place November 11, 2026, at Shakespeare’s Globe in London.
“The Media Freedom Awards celebrate the very best of journalism in all its forms and recognise the journalists and news organisations whose work makes a genuine difference to society,” said Dawn Alford, Chief Executive of the Society of Editors. “At a time when trusted, public interest journalism has never been more important, we want to showcase the investigations, campaigns and reporting that inform the public, challenge injustice and strengthen our democracy. We encourage entries from news organisations of every size, working across print, broadcast, digital and emerging platforms.”
The awards program is supported by corporate sponsors Allwyn, VodafoneThree and Octopus Energy. Eligible entries must have been published or broadcast between August 11, 2025, and August 16, 2026. Judges will evaluate submissions based on evidence of journalism that informs the public, champions media freedom, drives meaningful change, gives voice to underrepresented communities or demonstrates outstanding journalistic enterprise and public service.
For podcast producers and audio journalists, the inclusion of emerging news platforms as eligible categories represents a shift toward recognizing audio storytelling formats alongside traditional media. Podcasts and audio documentaries that meet the eligibility criteria and advance public interest journalism can compete for awards recognition, potentially elevating the profile of audio-first investigative and narrative work within the broader journalism community.
The expansion to 22 categories reflects growing recognition of diverse journalistic formats and platforms operating in the modern media landscape. As traditional newsrooms face budget constraints and audience fragmentation, awards programs that recognize excellence across multiple platforms—including podcasts, social media journalism and digital-native outlets—signal industry acknowledgment that quality journalism takes many forms. The addition of a Social Media Journalist of the Year category particularly signals the Society of Editors‘ commitment to recognizing reporting that breaks through algorithm-driven platforms to reach audiences.
The Media Freedom Awards represent one of several major journalism recognition programs in the United Kingdom. The Society of Editors previously launched the News Podcast Awards in February 2026, demonstrating institutional focus on podcast and audio journalism recognition. The dual award programs suggest growing industry investment in celebrating excellence across audio and emerging platforms alongside traditional print and broadcast journalism.
The awards ceremony at Shakespeare’s Globe will bring together editors, news leaders and journalists from across the country for what the Society of Editors describes as a high-profile event. Previous iterations of the awards have drawn entries from news organizations of varying sizes, from large national outlets to regional publications and digital-first news organizations. The organization’s emphasis on accepting entries from organizations of every size suggests an effort to recognize journalistic excellence across the industry spectrum, not limited to major commercial or public broadcasting entities.
Journalists and news organizations interested in submitting entries can access entry information, eligibility criteria and category guidance at www.societyofeditors.org. Sponsorship inquiries can be directed to office@societyofeditors.org. For podcast producers and audio journalists working in public interest journalism, investigation, or reporting that challenges power or gives voice to underrepresented communities, the 2026 Media Freedom Awards represent a formal industry recognition pathway for audio-format work.
