Magellan AI data indicates podcast advertising is accelerating in 2026, with rising ad spending, improved measurement capabilities and expanded brand participation creating new revenue opportunities for creators and platforms across the medium.
Jim Ballas, President of Measurement at Magellan AI, said podcast advertising is winning larger ad budgets as attribution and multichannel measurement tools mature, enabling advertisers to track campaign performance across platforms more effectively. Ballas noted that some podcasts could support one additional advertisement per episode without diminishing audience engagement, while video continues to emerge as an additional growth lever for the sector.
The momentum reflects a broader shift in advertiser behavior as traditional television audiences fragment across ad-free streaming services. A recent study by Cumulus Media and Signal Hill Insights found that podcast listeners are disproportionately heavy users of ad-free video platforms, positioning podcasting as an increasingly valuable channel for brands seeking to reach audiences abandoning conventional broadcast television. The findings underscore how podcasts can fill an advertising gap created by cord-cutting and consumer migration to subscription-based services without traditional ad loads.
“Better attribution and multichannel measurement are helping unlock bigger ad budgets,” said Ballas on the industry podcast “PodBiz,” highlighting the technical infrastructure improvements driving advertiser confidence. These advances allow marketers to quantify return on investment more precisely, justifying larger allocations to audio advertising and enabling podcast networks to command premium rates from brands.
The developments carry significant implications for podcast creators and production companies. As measurement tools become more sophisticated, independent podcasters and established networks can demonstrate tangible audience value to sponsors, potentially leveling competitive dynamics between well-funded operations and emerging shows. Improved attribution also enables creators to negotiate better deal terms by proving listener engagement and demographic reach to advertisers.
The advertising gains arrive as the broader podcast industry continues evolving its definitions and business models. Signal Hill Insights research released this week shows that while the industry’s new AMP Accords definition of a podcast largely aligns with consumer expectations, video remains a complicating factor. Nearly two-thirds of podcast consumers expect shows to be exclusively or primarily audio when asked directly, though only 38 percent spontaneously define podcasts around audio alone. Just 3 percent expect podcasts to be video-only, suggesting audio-first strategies remain dominant in audience preferences.
Industry executives continue positioning video as a supplementary growth channel rather than a replacement for audio. PodcastOne President Kit Gray stated that major brands are increasingly “buying into the communities” around creators, with companies developing shows into franchises spanning audio, video, television and other platforms. Disney+ is expanding its video podcast strategy, signing Gary Neville’s “The Overlap” to bring shows to UK and Ireland audiences, while TuneIn is extending its automotive reach through a deal with iM Media Labs, bringing podcasts directly into vehicle dashboard systems.
Technical improvements in podcast buying are also supporting advertiser growth. Basis announced an integration with Barometer that adds AI-powered contextual analysis to programmatic podcast purchasing, allowing advertisers to screen individual episodes for brand-suitability risks before bidding. The approach expands available inventory while giving marketers greater control, potentially unlocking budgets previously reserved for safer channels.
The convergence of better measurement, expanding advertiser participation and evolving distribution models suggests podcast advertising will continue capturing larger shares of overall media spending. As creators demonstrate measurable audience value and platforms offer increasingly sophisticated buying tools, podcasting is transitioning from a growth category to an established advertising channel with the infrastructure and data backing traditionally commanded by older media formats.
